Unity is a precious diamond. Anonymous

I’m not sure that’s true. Or at least, I’m pretty sure I don’t care much for the imagery of this quote. Diamonds have many facets, just as each of us does. But diamonds are hard, unyielding, inflexible. They have value but they don’t grow. They attract us with their sparkling certainty, but they don’t adapt to changing circumstances and understanding.

The strength of human unity doesn’t lie in rigidity. It lies in its diversity and in its fluidity. It’s our ability to embrace new ideas, unique perspectives, and fresh insights that make us such a powerful part of the world we live in.

Unity is indeed precious.

But the unity of mutuality is nothing like a diamond.
