“Assumptions are the termites of relationships.” – Henry Winkler
Kind of an interesting view of things. One of the most frequent criticisms of the Golden Rule is that it assumes the “other” wants the same thing that you would want in the same situation.
It’s a false argument; one that relies on a very shallow interpretation of the concept of “doing unto others.” Nevertheless, we do need to be cognizant of the possibility of misapplying through neglect.
Just as termites slowly eat away at the foundations of our homes, failing to make the greatest possible effort to understand the “other” can eat away at this foundational principle of life.
