A global family. It’s a phrase that comes to us easily. The concept seems so simple, so logical. So faithful. And, so far in our history, so impossible.

But does it need to be?

There are those who believe that humanity is not capable of changing, that it will take nothing less than divine intervention to cure the world of its ills.

Those who founded the world’s great faiths seem to have disagreed. If they did not believe we were capable of creating a just, equitable, and, above all compassionate, society, why would they have suffered through the ridicule and abuse that was hurled at them? Why would they persist in upholding a guiding principle like the Golden Rule if there was no chance that we could, one day, live up to it?

I believe that they saw something in humanity that we often overlook. A spark of the Divine that can be fanned into a flame of hope. They saw our potential.

They put up with a lot to tell us about it. Perhaps we should try to not disappoint them.
