Good at Heart

In spite of everything that has happened, I still believe that people are really good at heart - Anne Frank 1929-1945
I first heard the story of Anne Frank as a boy in school. Even then, knowing very little of the suffering in the world, I was moved by her spirit. There were, no doubt, many, many stories like Ann’s, never recorded, never told.
The Golden Rule challenges us to put ourselves in another’s place and to consider them from that perspective. I confess that, even after years of practice, I can only do this in what is, to me, a superficial way, and without any certainty that I am getting it right. I can, however, be fairly certain of one thing - that I would not do the memory of the countless people from numerous genocides, justice. Perhaps, since I cannot even make the attempt without shedding copious tears, I am getting it a tiny bit right.
Could I find the generosity of spirit to make the statement quoted above? I don’t know. to be honest, I doubt I could. I can only hope that her example will encourage us to continue to champion the concept of the Golden Rule and to move ever closer to truly treating each other as ourselves.
